The SMASUS project envisaged the development of intelligent, functional and sustainable plastic packaging for food supplements and medicines (solid and liquid), using active coating and sensorisation solutions to maintain and preserve shelf-life and monitor the condition of the packaged product.

These innovative packages were developed without altering the mechanical properties of the packaging, without affecting the end-of-life processes of the materials (recycling) and without transferring the intelligent/functional materials to the products. In this way, sustainable product monitoring solutions and packaging with improved barrier properties enhance the innovative nature of the solutions envisaged in this project, since the market does not yet offer packaging solutions with active and intelligent action in maintaining and monitoring the characteristics of food and pharmaceutical supplements.
